In 1910, shoemaker
Abraham Hyde opened a shoe store in Cambridge, Massachusetts, calling it “AR Hide & Sons.”
AR Hide & Sons produced slippers made from carpet scraps that became very popular, leading the business to expand to include in its line of walking shoes. Later,
sports shoes and ice skates were also added.
During World War II, Hyde produced
boots for the U.S. Army and was the only American shoe manufacturer to receive the esteemed Army & Navy Award for
excellence in manufacturing.
After the war, Hyde resumed production of athletic shoes and purchased the Illinois Athletic Shoe Company in 1952.
During the 1960s, the company also produced footwear for NASA astronauts.
In June 1965 the
boots worn by Ed White , the first American astronaut to walk in space, bore the
Hyde brand!
In 1968, Hyde acquired SSMC of Kutztown, PA;
Saucony running shoes remained a well-kept secret among a small group of running enthusiasts until 1977, when a popular American magazine awarded them an award.
The resulting publicity helped consolidate the Saucony brand, increasing its reputation for
high-quality footwear and innovative technical performance, qualities for which it is appreciated today.

Since that date
Saucony has set the standard.
1980 – TRAINER 80 : shoe with innovative shape and fit.
1983 – FLIGHT : first shoe in the world with dual-density EVA midsole.
1987 – INSTEP : first technical walking shoe.
1989 – CROSSPORT : multipurpose shoe based on running techniques.
1991 – GRID : first system in the world to offer “cushioning” and “stabilized” at the same time.
1998 – SAUCONY INC.: the company changes its name.
2006 – PROGRID : substantial evolution of the Grid system.
2007 – FLEXION PLATE: composite plate inserted into the midsole to provide great reactivity.
The
name Saucony was born in 1898 in a small town in Pennsylvania.
SSMC began its operations along the banks of the Saucony River.
The Native Americans, who inhabited that area, coined this name which translated means
Waters that run lightly, an appropriate phrase given the history of the brand! The
Saucony logo , in fact, is composed of a small wave, called
river in English.
Today Saucony specializes in producing high-quality, high-performance technical running shoes that have earned the esteem, respect and loyalty of numerous athletes and running enthusiasts around the world.
