Story of a Pair of Jeans

Trousers with five pockets, three at the front and two at the back, the latter applied: Blue-Jeans . Today a symbol of freedom , rebellion and adventure, it has earned a place of honour in both men's and women's wardrobes around the world. The history of jeans is quite ancient, in fact, around 1500 the term blue jeans indicated a particular type of blue tarpaulin used on ships for sails and to cover goods. Rough fabric , particularly resistant that was manufactured in the city of Nimes, hence the word denim and used by Genoese sailors (the word Jean means Genoa blue). From about 1850 the term jeans began to identify not only the fabric, but also the style of trousers. Legend has it that Morris Levis Strauss , a Bavarian merchant who moved to California, had sold almost all his merchandise before landing on land and had only some tent cloths left; when a gold prospector asked him to sell him some trousers, the merchant could have them made only with the tent cloth he had left. In 1873, the American patent office issued the authorization to exclusively produce trousers made of sturdy cotton held together by traditional sewing stitches and metal rivets . At the beginning of the 1900s, two other companies that later became very famous began to produce similar trousers: Lee and Wrangler. Jeans arrived in Europe after the war and with the American cinema of the 1950s, jeans entered wardrobes all over the world. At the end of the 70s, brands transformed it into an elegant item of clothing worn by everyone, without political or social distinctions, thus becoming a cult object . Let's better define the concept of denim : it is a cotton fabric that can contain a percentage of lycra to give it elasticity, it is dyed when it is still a thread and its peculiarity is the colored warp, while the weft remains in raw carded yarn, giving a two-tone effect . To obtain the blue dye , indigo is used, which is deposited only on the outside of the threads, with a bath and oxidation process that leaves the natural color on the inside of the threads. Initially it is quite rigid, while after the first wash the fabric reacts by tightening and softening. The types of washing are different: bleached , light thanks to the addition of chlorine to the first wash; tie-blanched with irregular patches; stone-washed , to which washing with pumice stones gives a worn appearance.
